How To Get Eternal Life 101

If you cling to your life, you will lose it; but if you give up your life for me, you will find it. Matthew 10:39 Over this past week I’ve found myself hearing and teaching this recurring theme of giving – giving to others and to God – so it was no surprise that my study for the day found me in Matthew 19.  The Bible tells us Jesus is just walking on his way to somewhere (like he usually is), when a man stops him out of the blue and asks: …  “Teacher, what good thing must I do to get eternal life?”  Jesus said, “Why do you question me about what’s good? God is the One who is good. If you want to enter the life of God, just do what he tells you.” The man asked, “What in particular?” Jesus said, “Don’t murder, don’t commit adultery, don’t steal, don’t lie, honor your father…

I just had a thought.

Life without God is meaningless. And someone might think, well I don’t believe in any god, and I have a meaningful life. But it’s not quite true. If you think hard enough, there is ALWAYS something in your life that serves as a god – I know there are things in my life that do even though I do believe in Him. There will always be those things on which you focus your attention and find value and satisfaction in and that guide your path and decisions: careers, money, the desire for more things. Sometimes you have to take a close look at your life and determine your gods – the things you derive meaning from – and figure out how healthy they are/aren’t, and perhaps get rid of some of them.

A Call to Service

Back in high school my friend Yasmin and I wrote a play for our Founder’s Day called Mission Impossible: A Call to Service about our Founder’s being called by God to become missionaries, and sent to Cape Coast, Ghana to build and steward an all-girls boarding school. Think a cross between Charlie’s Angels, Mission Impossible, and TBN – needless to say it was hilarious and we had the whole school in stitches. Totally besides the point, but today I remembered that play because I was thinking about how important service is, and by extension, how every Christian needs to be planted in a Church.  What do I mean by planted?  Being planted in a church is more than just attending a meeting and signing some papers and being handed a membership card that you can whip out to prove you’re a Christian. It’s more than just joining Bible study groups and fellowships, though…

Acting on Faith

I was talking to a friend this past weekend about how I’ve always had difficulty balancing waiting with moving.  That is, do I ‘Be still and know that He is God’, or do I start commanding mountains to move in the faith that they budge?  “But what if I move and it’s not God’s time? Or what if it’s not God’s will?” I ask. “Or what if I just move and nothing happens?”  So 9 times out of 10 I find myself with one foot through the door and the other still stuck inside not sure what to do.  And yet, as I searched the Bible, I couldn’t find one instance where faith was unaccompanied by action. In fact Hebrews 11 alone outlines 14 times where faith was expressed through action.  When Moses reached the Red Sea, not knowing how or when God would deliver them, kept staff raised in faith that…

Conversations with God

Sometimes I still feel like I have to monitor God in some aspects of my life lol I say: “God- can we collaborate on this life thing? Can I give you suggestions about what I want this to look like? Tell you what would work best for me?” And He gives me the side-eye, laughs, and shakes His head. “Child, you had the reigns, and look at where it got you!” He says. “ But,” I protest, “I just need you to know some things about me… you know, my preferences and what-not” “Really?” He chuckles. “Like what? Pray tell.” “Well… like, in terms of the man I want to spend the rest of my life with. I want him to be-” “Wait-” God interjects “Let me get a pen!” He feigns a search for a writing instrument. I frown, but He smiles. “Continue” He says. “I’m listening.” “Well…” I…

Getting To Know God

Over the past couple weeks I’ve had the opportunity to ‘debate’ my faith, and one of the questions that kept coming up was, why would I want to serve/believe in a God who demands your obedience? There are good people in this world, but your God says if they don’t believe in Jesus, they’re going to burn in Hell. What kind of God would do that? Let good people be punished because they don’t choose HIS path? What then is the point of free will? And honestly I didn’t know the answer when these questions were posed to me. I myself had questioned these things at times. But that’s what I love most about discussing my faith- it pushes me to seek answers to what I don’t know, and allows God to reveal a new layer of who He is to me. It gives me the opportunity to find clarity…
